If you’ve just got engaged, huge Congratulations! It’s an exciting time, especially when you start thinking about your wedding day and all the ideas start to buzz around your head. It can also be a really daunting time too because there’s basically so much choice, but don’t be deterred, here’s some valuable advice on what to consider before you choose one of the most important things on your wedding day – your photographer.

  • Set your budget from early on and decide what is important to you. If you are passionate about having beautiful photographs of your day then you may have to make sacrifices in other areas to get the photographer you want. Good photography doesn’t come cheap for a number of reasons. You are not only paying for someone who is experienced at working under the pressures of a wedding day but also for someone who has the overheads of running a business. If it comes down to a choice between a few photographers, don’t just base your decision solely on price, look at all the aspects including the person who you think would fit best into your day.
  • Start looking early. Photographers get booked up 12 – 18months in advance so if you’ve got your eye on someone who’s work you love, enquire as soon as you have your date set and your venue booked to avoid disappointment.
  • Make sure you meet your photographer before you book them. A photographer is the one vendor who you will spend the most time with on your wedding day so you need to ensure that you get along and that you are on the same page with what you require from your photography and what they can deliver. Photography is a very personal and emotional decision, it’s not like picking chair covers so I would really urge you to take the time to meet with someone before you book them.
  • Ask to see a selection of recent work including a full wedding, don’t settle for a ‘best of’ slideshow. Anyone can take one good image in a day, a professional photographer is able to deliver consistent results.
  • Make sure your photographer is insured and a member of a professional body. Some venues will not allow photographers on the premises without seeing a copy of their insurance so ensure you hire a professional who does. Membership of a professional body helps to ensure that if the worst happened on your wedding day and your photographer was ill, there’s a better chance of finding a replacement within that network to cover your day.
